Ty Norris Biography

Ty Norris is one of the most popular and richest Engineer who was born on July 19, 1965 in Sumter, South Carolina, United States. The year 2013 saw Norris had a controversy following his participation in the Federated Auto Parts 400, in which he was a the spotter of Brian Vickers. Following the incident, MWR driver Clint Bowyer spun out to draw warning, Norris advised Vickers to pit at the restart to assist another MWR driver Martin Truex Jr. win the tiebreaker to earn a place for the Chase for the Sprint Cup along with Ryan Newman. The situation grew worse, Newman was pushed so far behind in the pitting sequence that he was unable to gain a few positions and ended up finishing third, which was not enough for him to be able to end the tie Truex. On September 9 NASCAR took the decision to stop Norris for a period of indefinite time, concluding that his decision to allow Vickers pit was an intentional attempt to alter his Chase standings. It also docked the three MWR teams with 50 points for owner/driver before the point totals were reset for the Chase – a decision that pushed Truex Jr. out of the Chase to be replaced by Newman. MWR has also been fined a record amount of $300,000 by NASCAR.

Following the incident at Richmond and the hefty fine that followed, NASCAR suspended Norris indefinitely from all competition. Norris was reinstated after ten races and soon returned to MWR. He would act as a spotter for Vickers for a few races before transitioning to a public/sponsor relations position. However, MWR was never able to fully recover after the penalties and was eventually forced to close its doors in 2015.

In 2004, the successful businessman Bruton Smith was hired by Norris to become the vice-president of special projects at Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (SMI). Norris managed the specific projects of Smith’s motorsports conglomerate. It has tracks owned by the company located in Atlanta, Georgia; Bristol, Tennessee, Charlotte, North Carolina; Las Vegas, Nevada; Fort Worth, Texas; and Sonoma, California; as well as several companies that support the industry like The Performance Racing Network (PRN), The Source International (QVC’s motorsports merchandise partner) and SMI Properties.

Norris was the focus from Dale Earnhardt as the 7-time champion was able to establish his own business Dale Earnhardt, Inc. in 1996 Earnhardt appointed him to be the executive vice president of motorsports at DEI. He was instrumental in helping the team get ready for its debut at NASCAR’s elite racing in 1998. In the following 8 years the trio of Earnhardt as well as others worked to create DEI into a motorsports powerhouse and the team won 65 NASCAR races and four championships from 1996 until 2004.

In late 2015, he joined marketing agency Spire Sports + Entertainment, eventually becoming president of the firm. When Spire expanded to form a Cup team in 2018, they picked up Norris as the president of the new Spire Motorsports.
